Should you hike Hooker Valley in NZ? This was o Should you hike Hooker Valley in NZ? This was one of the very first hike that I have done over a longer period of time. Before this, I usually only hiked about 15 minutes to maximum an hour. But this one was three hours hike one way. I took my very new Canon 5D mark iv and actually fell under the rocks during one of my night photoshoot. While skipping through the rocks, I slipped and my camera fell, lens first. My heart stopped for a bit. Luckily my camera was okay. This was also my very first hike where I was able to see ice glacier. The ice started to crack and melt away from the glacier. It then got washed away to the lake in front of Mount Cook into the river. There's just so many different points of view here. From the river of the lake, also the turquoise water of the glacier water. Having said that, it is one of the most beautiful hikes that I have done. It's not super challenging, quite straightforward, and rather flat. It is just long, but you know, as long as you take your time and have a little bit of rest now and then, you'll be fine. Shooting the methane bubbles in Abraham Lake is no Shooting the methane bubbles in Abraham Lake is no doubt one of the most challenging shots to take. Especially when there is a backlight. The ice is slippery, the wind is strong and heaps of focus stacking to do 😂 but this was the morning that things were on point, I finally found a picturesque bubble layers and I was so stoked! On this Wicked Hunt I left at 4:30 am but by the time I found the nice bubbles the sun was way too high. Luckily the subtle glow makes a massive difference to the photo. One chance! That’s all I have... Filled with do One chance! That’s all I have... Filled with doubt.. will the sky clear up? It is filled with clouds where I am. I doubled check the forecast. The hell with it... It was my only chance. To find the alignment of the Milky Way, the moon setting 🌙 and zodiacal light. I had my doubt. Three hours drive one way, through traffic during the rush hour. Do I really want to go? Hesitantly I packed my bag. I put my cameras, lenses, tripods and lights. What should’ve been 2.5 hrs drive turned into 3 hours. I had to drive across the city during traffic hours. But I push through slowly. It felt like riding on the back of a turtle. I got there just before sunset. There’s not a single cloud in the sky! I walked around the vast National Park, looking for a composition. This spot has been photographed a million times, and I wanted something different. That’s when the inspiration comes, and this is one of the shots from that night.
